Orthodontic Emergencies Although some discomfort may occasionally arise, most problems are can be handled at home. Here are some helpful hints for common issues with orthodontic appliances:
Long or “Pokey” Wire: As the teeth are moving and changing, so do the wires. This could cause a wire to poke out of the end of a brace. An easy fix to this could be to use a pair of nail clippers to snip the end of the long wire. Use rubbing alcohol first to disinfect the clippers.
Turning the Expander: Here is a video tutorial if you are having trouble turning the expander.
Broken Brace or Band: If a brace breaks away from the tooth, as long as it is not causing pain, this can be addressed at the next appointment. If a band becomes loose and is irritating during chewing, please call our office to address the problem.
**If dental trauma occurs, though, please do not hesitate to contact us or your dentist to help.**
